Mind

What is mind? Tantra tells us that mind is made up of three components or functions. The crudest part of mind is Citta, where imagination and mental pictures take up residence. The Citta takes the shape of whatever is being perceived by the eye and the other senses. More subtle than Citta is the Ahamtattva which takes the notiion of doing something. It is the portion of the mind which says "I do" or of performing actions. Subtlest is the Mahatattva which is the pure "I" feeling.

The mind which makes us do things is called the unit mind and is made of the same stuff as the Cosmic Mind. What then might differentiate the two? Cosmic Mind is the crudification of Pure Consciousness. Further crudification of the Cosmic Mind resulted in the expressed universe being created. At the point of the greatest crudification, life is born and with it the reflection of consciousness; it is in mind that consciousness is reflected. As more and more complex minds are evolved, so also the reflection of consciousness. In man, a very evolved mind is housed. Man uses this mind to ask about his origins. He seeks answers to questions which constantly pop up in his mind.

Life, for a man is m0re than just food and sex the way it is with animals. He needs to find meaning in his life. He stares up at the starry and wonders what his place is in the universe. It is the questions that he asks that distinguishes him from the rest of all that are alive. He uses his mind to find in meditation the secrets of the universe.
